Daniels Seventy-week Prophecy

Seventy-year prophecy.

For as long as I can remember there have been those who predict the end of the world. In just this past year alone there have been four predictions that I am aware of that even included dates.

Serious Bible students tend to dismiss these predictions as irresponsible and preposterous. Being aware of Jesus words in Matthew 24:36  "But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” We understand that there will be an end of the world, (2PE 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.) but God has not chosen to reveal the exact date or time to mankind.

It is true that God has reserved for Himself the exact time of this future event He has provided for the serious Bible student a sequence of events leading up to it. A study of these events begins in the ninth chapter of the book of Daniel and concludes in the book of the revelation.

DAN 9:1-2 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans - in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD, given through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

By this time in Daniels life he realized that the seventy years must be nearing the time of fulfillment. Daniel then began to pray to God but his prayer was interrupted in verse 21 by the angel Gabriel. In verses 24-27 of this chapter Gabriel gave to Daniel the seventy-week prophecy to record. The understanding of this prophecy unlocks the secret of when the end of the world will come to pass. This is not a study to be rushed through. It will take some time to do the research and verify the evidence recorded in Scriptures that reveals the answer to this allusive time.

These are the four verses that provide the launching pad for our study. Read them carefully several times. We will begin to lay the foundation for our case in lesson number one.

DAN 9:24  "Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.

25  "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.

26  "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. the end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

27  Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. and on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate."
