Davids great sin

~David's great sin:

2SA 12:15 Then Nathan departed to his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became very ill.

  • An innocent child was about to pay the ultimate price for anothers sin.

16 David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.

17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them.

  • pleaded with God for the child
  1. The guilty is more interested in the condition of the child than in repentance and asking God to forgive his sin.

  • fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.
  1. Personal intervention will not change Gods plan.

18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!"

  1. The price for this sin has been paid for by the innocent.

19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead."

  • He is dead.
  1. It is finished.
  2. God has spoken.
  3. God has delivered His message.

20 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate.

  • God's judgment is noted.
  1. The sinner went to the Lord in repentance seeking forgiveness for his sin.
  2. Then he went to his own house and continued on in what was left of his life.

21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food."

22 So he said, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?'

  • While the child was still alive.
  1. 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?'
  2. Only God knows His perfect plan and the final outcome of it.

23 "But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

  • "But now he is dead.
  1. God has spoken.
  2. God has been heard.

  • The journey to heaven is one way trip.
  1. I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

  • Jesus teaches on the eternal destiny of little children.
  1. And Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. "Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:2-4

  • God's example of the result of the innocent paying the price for the sin of another.
  1. David's sin cost him the joy of raising his infant son to manhood.
  2. Gods answer to David's sin was to take the infant son from David and to heaven to live with Him.
  3. David's sin cost him the privilege of building the temple for God.
  4. David's sin caused him the agony he experienced in the division of his family.
  5. David's sin caused his oldest son to turn against him.
  • and the list goes on.

~Unless the LORD Builds the House:

Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is His reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127 A song of ascents. Of Solomon. "Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain".

And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 1 John 2:2
